Cognitive War in Space: Human Perception and Infrastructure in a Contested Domain
Space security is increasingly about protecting the infrastructure that enables governments, organizations, and societies to perceive reality, establish trust, and make informed decisions. The data generated, transmitted, and analyzed through that infrastructure supports strategic awareness, informs policy, enables military and commercial operations, and facilitates international cooperation. As reliance on space-enabled infrastructure grows, so does the importance of protecting the availability, integrity, and trustworthiness of the information it provides. For cybersecurity professionals, this represents an evolution from protecting
networks to safeguarding the Critical Cognitive Infrastructure that underpins trusted decision-making, national resilience, and decision superiority.
Mariah Maury is an independent consultant and researcher focused on space domain awareness, risk analysis, and global security trends. Her work is aimed at supporting safe, sustainable, and scalable space operations. She entered the field after years of coaching individuals, families, and professionals, including several clients in criminal investigation, whose encouragement led her to apply her analytical and pattern recognition skills to research and operational analysis. While earning her Bachelor of Science in Political Science at Arizona State University, Mariah participated in the ASU Online Undergraduate Research Scholars Program, producing research on space security, conflict risk, and governance gaps. That work led to her role as an organizing contributor for the Interplanetary Initiative's Preventing Space War Forum, which brings together global experts to address risk mitigation and international coordination in space. She earned her Master of Arts in Global Affairs and Management and a Space Leadership Certificate from the Thunderbird School of Global Management.
Her interests extend to quantum computing, AI, data processing, systems thinking, and the roles they play in space, cyber, and cognitive security.
