"Truth" Machines: When Market Authority Becomes Systemic Vulnerability

A price move can tell you that something happened, but it cannot tell you whether the market discovered truth or manufactured it.  This talk examines financial markets as “truth” machines: authoritative signals that increasingly shape the beliefs, policies, headlines, and economic pressures they appear merely to measure. From bank runs and meme stocks to oil shocks and prediction markets, it shows how prices can become instruments of influence when the target is not profit but belief. The result is a systemic vulnerability hiding inside ordinary finance: whoever can move the signal may be able to move the story.

This is cognitive warfare waged through markets. The target is not a mind or a machine, it is collective belief, and the battlefield is the exact place where expectation meets price.

Web Begole is co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of MarketReader, a real-time market intelligence platform he launched in 2021 alongside Jens Nordvig and Evan Schnidman. MarketReader uses a proprietary data engine and generative AI to explain, in real time, why markets are moving, an approach built to replace the kind of lengthy, subjective analysis that has traditionally lagged behind fast moving markets.

Before MarketReader, Begole served as founding Chief Technology Officer of Exante Data from 2016 to 2021, building the technology infrastructure behind macro research trusted by many of the world's largest institutional investors. He holds the Chartered Market Technician (CMT) and Chartered Financial Technician (CFTe) designations, credentials he pursued deliberately, believing that anyone building technology for a domain should understand that domain at a practitioner's level, not just the technology behind it. He is also the creator of MarketWebs, a technical analysis indicator built on Auction Market Theory that has been used by traders since 2015.

Begole's path into fintech runs through the theater. He holds a BS in Computer Science from the Rochester Institute of Technology and an MFA in theater directing, and spent years working professionally in theater, including with Ensemble Studio Theatre and Theatre for a New Audience, before moving into finance and technology. He now serves on RIT's School of Performing Arts Advisory Board. His study of Brecht and Benjamin shaped a philosophy he still applies today: the most powerful systems, whether a play or a market model, are the ones that make their audience think, rather than asking them to simply trust the output. A model that cannot explain what changed in the world to produce its output, in his view, is not offering intelligence. It is offering a guess with a confidence score.
